2007 EPA Emissions Readiness Field Reliability Assessment
Project type
Field Reliability Growth and Challenging Use Case Characterization
Date
2005 - 2007
Locations of Study
Mount Vernon Washington, East Liberty Ohio, Portland Oregon.
Role
Field Reliability Team Project Leader
Project type
Reliability Growth, In-field Robustness Verification, EPA Emission Compliance, Diesel powertrain to control systems interactions, J1939 CAN bus data mining, Use case characterization, System application engineering evaluation and approval.
The leading North American air brake system component manufacturer partnered with several premium diesel original equipment manufacturers (OEMS) to understand the effect of new rigorous 2007 emission changes on our product. Joe Schwendler led the team of field engineers that embedded with vehicle OEMs in their North American Reliability Growth test centers regionally to collect detailed data on new use cases with hotter under-hood temperatures. Data collected and risks identified were assessed by the respective internal air brake component engineering groups over 18 month period. Data summaries shared directly with Reliability Growth principals at OEMs.
Technical Outcomes: At risk components were re-designed, relocated, or both. Chassis heat shields added by OEMs to protect at risk components. Best practice product application steps taken by OEMs (with the benefit of hard data characterizing use-case/risks on actual pre-production chassis) to ensure excellent End User Experiences.
Business Outcomes: Robustness and reliability and functional safety in-field for component supplier and OEM improved as result of study results and recommendation implementations. Technical relationships and future collaborations cemented between component supplier and OEMs.
